Ceramic artist, Katherine Smith was born in Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada and raised in rural Tennessee. She attended her first year of college at Carson-Newman studying Photography. It was here that she realized her passion for ceramics. Carson-Newman had no ceramic program and Katherine found herself missing working with clay from her experiences in high school. Believing ceramics was her true desire, she transferred to Tennessee Technological University to take advantage of the facilities at the Appalachian Center for Craft. She graduates in May 2016 with her Bachelors of Fine Art with a concentration in Ceramics. Katherine is currently a member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. She has exhibited in coffee shops and in the galleries of Carson-Newman and the Appalachian Center for Craft. She has been awarded several scholarships for her art. Katherine’s love for nature inspires her works, which focus on the restorative and renewing powers of nature.
